Goal Setting

It is the start of a brand new year. Everything feels brand new to us and it is another chance, much like the day before, to make a different choice. I am not one for resolutions. I find that when I make them, I often let them fall by the wayside. Whether it was to lose weight or get organized, I would create a plan and then fail to follow it. In the past couple of years, I have learned to silently move forward, in the new year, in a new way. I have changed my focus, let go of past hurts, and have grown closer to God. I didn't need to follow a plan to achieve those personal goals. I just allowed them to happen by shifting my thoughts.

I can't even begin to count how many times I see "New year, New Me" on social media. I probably posted that myself, a time or two. I always planned projects or big ideas when "the time was right". I never fully allowed myself to just go ahead and get them done. They never came to fruition. So, this year, instead of making any resolutions, I decided to go with my previous year's idea and shift my focus. I keep five tips on my phone to remind me of what I should be doing, in order to achieve my goals. There are days when I feel as though things are too hard, or I don't want to do it; but I have to remind myself of what I want to achieve.

Here are five tips that help me focus:

Let Go of Whatever is Holding You Back. Don’t make excuses. Just do it. Case in point. I kept telling myself that I would wait to create my blog until I had the best design, the best fonts, or the right pictures. I had so much to say, but I wasn’t ready to share it because I didn’t think the presentation was pretty enough. When you are pouring into others, it doesn’t have to be pretty. Often times, it is a complete mess, but if you have the right message and heart behind it, you can grow it.

Create Your Vision. Only you know exactly what you want to say and how you want to say it. We all have a vision for our futures. Even the things that happen along the way. Create those visions and make them happen. From the encouragement of a friend, I created a vision board. I had heard of them before and even how some people had vision board parties. Never did I think I would do one. I took out all of my magazines that I had saved over the years (yes, I have a ton) and I created an amazing board for myself. I even got my six year old daughter involved. It was a great way to bond and to learn about her vision. It also reminded me to make sure that I continue to encourage her.

Learn from Social Media. We are all on social media throughout the day. How much of our scrolling is meaningless? For me, sadly, most of it. I am not at all interested in what anyone does with each moment of their day. It’s mainly been something for me to pass time, instead of doing something productive. It also doesn’t help that I am just plain nosey. However, there are some really great people out there that are working in a field we would love to excel in. So, I decided I was going to cut my friends list in half, review my like pages, and instead of scrolling down the list of celebrity gossip pages, I was going to follow people who could help me brand my own business. I started to follow established bloggers, entrepreneurs, and branding consultants. This helped me to learn from people who are already successful. They gave me tips on how to build the right audience. I realized later that I was focusing more on my vision than on other people’s personal business. I found new ways to interact, as well as gain new contacts for consulting.

You’ll Never Fail. You will only fail if you don’t try. We have plans for the way we want things to go. Sometimes, it just doesn't happen that way. That's okay. It just gives us another chance to make it better than before. Adjustments are going to happen and we have to be flexible and open to changes. The ups and downs of creating something from our hearts and souls molds us and shapes us into who we are to become. We only fail when we give up or don't try.

Don't just go with the flow. Get your hustle on! We do it every day for our paying jobs because we need the check, correct? Why not use that same hustle for a few more hours a day to make your dreams come true? I often feel tired when I come home, and then I have to start second shift at home. It was time to start using my time more wisely. Instead of watching television or scrolling, I realized that my energy would be more useful if I wrote and created more content. When you have setbacks, just remember why you began this process in the first place. Look over your vision board. Add more to it. Take some things away. As you go through the process of creating your "happy", your priorities and goals may change. Be open and flexible to lessen stress, which will allow you to continue working without feeling overwhelmed.
